University of Guam professor Dr. Tricia A. Lizama will be the featured guest on this Sunday’s ‘Your Humanities Half-Hour’ radio program.

Lizama will talk about her documentary film, Åmot Para I Hinemlo’ta, which explores Chamorro traditional medicine and healing in the Mariana Islands.

The film examines the current state of this ancient cultural practice through interviews with knowledgeable practitioners on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian including the similarities and differences among the islands.

It also explores the challenges confronting the perpetuation of traditional healing and how it can be reinvigorated and perpetuated for the continuing benefit of the indigenous community.

Lizama, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing and Social Work at UOG, is a descendant of a traditional healer and a mother of six who has spent the past five years researching the subject. Her film project was supported by a Community Grant awarded by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council.

She is also the chair of Inetnon Yo’amte, an organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and perpetuate traditional Chamorro healing.

“Your Humanities Half-Hour,” which airs each Sunday from 2pm to 2:30pm on Power 99, is hosted by Catherine R. Perry.
