Out of seven teams, the Triathlon Association of the CNMI Team came out on top at the third Race for Life scavenger hunt of IT&E yesterday at Micro Beach.

The islandwide scavenger hunt had a Mario Kart theme.

The TRAC team, composed of Zaiyra Ganacias, Ira Marquez, Vernice Estepa, Andrew Estepa, and Floro Derexes, who all participate in many of the islands’ marathons, completed the race in just 45 minutes.

Marquez, the team captain, said that their strategy focused on just looking for the QR codes that would give them the next clue in order to find the golden mushroom to secure their win. Overall, Marquez said that it was all a group effort and was mainly intended for the team to have fun.

The team was awarded gift cards to various restaurants (like the World Cafe at Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, the Loria restaurant at Kensington Hotel Saipan), beach chairs, and more that were donated by partner agencies.

The teams were instructed to find six hidden QR codes that IT&E provided. Since the theme was Mario Kart, in order to win the race, you would have to scan the QR code and solve the riddle to find the next destination that will lead you to the golden mushroom.

According to Kimberly Bautista, Saipan Tribune reporter who participated in the first Race for Life, said the second race was easier than this year’s since all the coordinates were a given and participants just had to be there first. She also added that the difference was that this year “we had to get down and search the area in order to find the QR codes and get to the next coordinate that will lead us to winning the race.”

IT&E general manager Rose Soledad said, “We are very thankful to all the teams and sponsors who are instrumental in the success of our annual fundraiser. We could not have pulled off another great event without their partnership and support.”

According to IT&E representative Jason Palacios, all of the proceeds raised from the Race for Life event will go to the Marianas March Against Cancer.

The other teams that participated in the scavenger hunt were BBJ Athletics, Weekend Thang, Koopalings, Saipan Tribune, Team Marpac, Saipan Paddling Club, Explorers, MVariety, and ITS Corp.
