The Triathlon Association of the CNMI has renewed its commitment to the Commonwealth Cancer Association by helping the latter in the staging of the 2017 Bike and Run for Cure Prostrate and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month last Saturday at the American Memorial Park.
Over 150 joined the race, run and bike combined. Both races started at 6am after a moment of silence that was made even somber with participants and organizers holding lit candles in memory of those who succumbed to cancer.
The five-kilometer run leg began at the AMP parking lot and participants headed toward the Gov. Eloy Inos Peace Park. The bike portion, which had a distance of 40K, also started in front of the AMP Visitors Center with riders making a turn at Quartermaster before heading to Banzai Cliff and back.
The race was not timed, but Kosuke Sato was the first to cross the finish line in the run leg, while youth cyclist Wynne Brillo completed the bike portion of the event ahead of the pack.
CCA program manager Juan L. Babauta said the weekend event was part of their campaign in raising awareness on prostate and childhood cancer.
“This event is a culmination of our program in raising awareness in these two types of cancers. TRAC has been a great partner in helping us in raising awareness through running, cycling, and having a healthy lifestyle as a whole,” said Babauta.
“October will be another busy month for us at the CCA since we’re going to commemorate the fallen firefighters. The proclamation will be in cooperation with the Department of Defense and the Emergency Management Services.”
Make-A-Wish Foundation Guam and CNMI board member Kanae Quinn was among those that chose to participate in the bike portion joining her husband Russ, and a host of veteran and weekend riders.
“Make-A-Wish has also supported the CCA in the past. We also have cancer patients and survivors as recipients,” Quinn said.
She reminded the public about a Make-A-Wish fundraising Wish Night event (silent auction) on Nov. 3 at Giovanni’s at the Hyatt Regency-Saipan. Tickets at the sit-down dinner are sold for $100.
