A 22-year-old Chinese tourist shot a few rounds of a handgun at a shooting range in western Garapan before fatally shooting himself Tuesday night.
The tourist, whose identity is being withheld at the moment, was pronounced dead by Commonwealth Health Center’s Dr. Martin Rohringer at 9:03pm, with the cause of death being a gunshot wound.
Police investigators confirmed that the victim died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Adrian Pangelinan yesterday.
Pangelinan did not indicate in his report which part of the body the wound was located.
Saipan Tribune learned that the incident happened at the Bing Beng Bang Shooting Range, which is located across the Micro Beach Hotel along Palm Street corner Corral Tree Avenue. Both the shooting range and the hotel are owned by businessman Ta Bun Kuy.
Police investigation showed that the victim entered Bing Beng Bang Shooting Range at 8pm and reviewed and signed the company’s waiver form.
The range master accompanied the victim to the range, where he shot a few rounds. The police report indicated that the victim then ran down the range and fired his gun. That’s when the range master called 911. It is presumed that that’s when the victim shot himself.
DPS received the 911 call at 8:06pm, with the caller stating that a man had shot himself at the Bing Beng Bang Shooting Range. Police officers were sent to the scene, where the caller brought them to the shooting range. Officers found the victim lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. The handgun was found beside the victim.
Saipan Tribune went to the shooting range late yesterday afternoon and learned that the range had been temporarily closed.
In November 2009, an employee of a shooting range in Kannat Tabla opened fired at the range, killing four persons, including two minors.
The gunman, a Chinese national, then drove a van to the Last Command Post in Marpi, where he opened fire with a rifle at a group of Korean tourists, wounding five. He proceeded to Banzai Cliff, set the van on fire, then fatally shot himself.
