Tourist robberies

Share

After seeing that video of the tourist lady getting hit by a car, I have been really curious on why someone chose to do such thing. I’ve read the first two articles about the hit-and-run, but both had no lead to why it was done. Until recently, the public was updated on why such a cruel action occurred.

I am writing to express how I feel toward this incident. Many people have this mentality of having or wanting to have money but not really how to make or earn the money. So it usually leads them to steal. Lately, most robbery cases have involved tourists. What good does that do to our community? Why do robbers usually attack our tourists? They may seem like the ones with the most money because they come here for pleasure, vacation, or maybe just to get away from where they live, but why would you leave the impression and prove to these people that Saipan is “the island of thieves” when their main purpose of vacation is for the beauty of the island.

It may not be their main purpose to hit the lady tourist, but why would someone really need to go to that extent just to get some “source of income” from the people who bring income to our islands? Our tourists bring the most income to our islands; the money that they spend on island eventually benefits us as a community. So stealing from them only means we would be stealing from ourselves.

We all need to take the time to help one another understand the importance of our tourists. One way or another, we would have experiences with them, but at the end of the day, they only help our island function.
