Tourism summit all set Wednesday
Registration has maxed out for the Marianas Tourism Education Council tourism summit this week, with over 350 students signed up. Due to popular demand among the schools to send students to the MTEC/MY WAVE (Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically) Tourism Summit more slots were opened—and immediately filled—last week.
“We are ecstatic about the enthusiastic support we are receiving from the schools and students about the summit,” said MTEC chair Vicky Benavente. “And thanks to the support of Saipan World Resort, we were able to open another 80 slots to accommodate more students who are interested in learning more about the industry and how they can get informed about the various careers within the hospitality industry.”
This year’s summit will be held on Oct. 30, 2013, at Saipan World Resort with the theme “Tourism is Everybody’s Business 24/7 in the 670.” The summit aims to educate students on the Northern Marianas Tourism industry and engage their active participation in tourism.
Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association president Mary T. Rhodes will be the keynote speaker. DOCOMO Pacific general manager James Nelson will make opening remarks and present the proceeds of the DOCOMO Pacific golf fundraising tournament to MTEC.
Students will then break into groups to address questions such as: 1) Our waters/reefs are one of our greatest treasures, so what can we do to encourage our citizens to preserve them?; 2) What are some ideas for the government and the community to keep people safe?, 3) What would you do to promote island culture?, and more. The winners of the MTEC essay contest “Tourism is Everybody’s Business 24/7 in the 670” will also be announced. (MTEC)
