Tough win for Kang, Chung
Daniel Kang and Andrew Chung labored their way through the semifinals of the U18 advanced doubles event in the Saipan International School Student Council Tennis Tournament.
After getting a bye in the opening week and automatically advancing to the quarterfinals, it took Chung and Kang a super-tiebreaker third set to eliminate Anthony Gregoire and Helen Kim and make it to the semis last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts. Kang and Chung eked out a 4-3 win in the opening set, but failed to finish off their foes early when Kim and Gregoire cruised to a 4-1 triumph. Then in the decider, Kang and Chung got their acts together for a 5-2 victory that set them a semis date with Malika Miyawaki and David Kwon at the lower half of the draw.
Miyawaki, one of the organizers of the inaugural tournament, and Kwon booked a Final Four slot in the division after easing past Daniel Heo and Jaehoon Son, 4-0, 4-1.
Joining the pairs of Kwon and Miyawaki and Kang and Chung in the semifinals were Sam Ryu and Min Cho and Steven Goodwin and Jeffrey Seo. Ryu and Cho pulled off a 4-3 victory over Isaac Heo and Serin Chung and completed a sweep with an easier 4-1 triumph to arrange a semis duel against Goodwin and Seo—a 4-2, 4-2 winner over Allan Lee and Andy Kim. Earlier in the first round, Goodwin and Seo also notched a two-set victory over Alex Park and Jun Wang, 4-3, 4-1.
Meanwhile, in other doubles results, Serin Chung and Hoo Wang marched into the title game in the U12 age group and will face Juncheol Hwang and Anna Kwon in this weekend’s finale.
Serin and Wang got a bye last Saturday and then topped Irin Chung and Savita Sikkel in their semis match last Sunday, 4-2, 4-2. Irin and Sikkel moved into the Final Four following a 4-0, 4-0 demolition of Christian Newman and Ian Song.
Hwang and Kwon also crushed Andy and Dana Lee, 4-0, 4-0, to gain the other finals berth. The Lees, before losing in the semifinals, had a hard earned 1-4, 4-3, 5-4 victory over June Yu and Takeru Jim.
Besides the U12 doubles finals, the third place game between the pairs of Irin Chung/Sikkel and Andy and Dana Lee and the rained-out matches in other divisions will be played this weekend.
