‘Torres still here’
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is still on island, but had to skip some appearances due to family emergencies, according to chief of staff Angel Demapan.
Torres, according to Demapan, is still around, belying rumors that he is off-island and Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios is acting governor.
The governor was supposed to attend the graduation ceremony for the Customs Division 8th Cycle at Pacific Islands Club Saipan yesterday morning, but Palacios had to fill in for the governor.
Saipan Tribune asked Demapan yesterday if Palacios is the acting governor, but he noted in an email that Torres is still in his office.
“[Torres] was back in the office [yesterday] and took care of several meetings,” he said. Demapan did not say what time the meetings were conducted yesterday, but he noted that Torres was in the hospital for a family emergency in the morning while Palacios attended the graduation ceremony.
In a previous statement, Demapan debunked rumors that Torres had gone off-island amid the Federal Bureau of Investigation executing several search warrants on Saipan, which included one on Torres’ house, vehicle, and office on Capital Hill.
Among the other places the FBI executed search warrants include the office of Alfred Yue of Marianas Consultancy Services LLC, a consultant for Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC; Legend Realty Saipan; and the Torres Brothers’ law office.
