Lt. Gov. Ralph DLG Torres proclaimed April 23 to May 2 as Marianas March Against Cancer Week yesterday, kicking off a flurry of activities leading to the Commonwealth Cancer Association’s signature fundraising drive on May 1 to 2 at the Hopwood Junior High School field.

The proclamation signing took place at the TSL Plaza in the presence of CCA members, Takecare/FHP board members, and the 2015 MMAC committee.

Nora Sablan, 2015 MMAC committee member, read the proclamation.

The proclamation states that cancer is one of the top two leading causes of death in the CNMI and the second leading cause of death in the United States.According to the American Cancer Society, nearly half of all men and a little over one third of all women in the U.S. will develop cancer during their lifetime.

“Nonetheless, the risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person’s lifestyle by quitting smoking, eating a better diet, and increasing physical activity,” Sablan read.

CCA will be collaborating with Division of Public Health under the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. and anti-cancer groups to provide cancer awareness, education, and outreach programs in the CNMI. They intend to educate the community about cancer and the need for research funding, early detection methods, effective treatments and prevention programs.

Sablan encouraged everyone to join the fight against this deadly disease by participating in the upcoming MMAC.

Torres urged all community members to celebrate the week by honoring the memory of those who have lost the fight with the disease and to stand, march, and unite with all those who are still fighting cancer today.
