Torres off to DC
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres would be leaving on Saturday to meet with senior officials of the U.S. Department of Defense as well as congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. to continue discussions on the proposed CW-1 program extensions.
According to press secretary Kevin Bautista, Torres was scheduled to leave for the mainland last Wednesday, but his medical adviser told him to postpone his departure due to an infection.
Bautista said Torres would also be meeting with senior US Department of Defense officials regarding the ongoing military buildup exercises in the Marianas.
“The data in the Government Accountability Office report from last May 2017 was clear. The truth is the CNMI does not have enough workers in all of the various fields and specialties to sustain the economic growth we need to avoid falling back into the severe economic depression we witnessed only a few short years ago. The presence of CWs and the CW program has created more jobs for our local residents because it has kept businesses up and running and allows for increased opportunities,” said Torres in a statement.
Bautista added that Torres emphasizes the importance of “bringing our voices” to Washington, D.C. at a “critical time,” especially when issues directly affecting the CNMI needs to be noticed by the U.S. Congress.
In the three weeks that Torres would be absent, Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog would be acting governor. The DOD Office of Economic Adjustment fully funded Torres’ trip.
