Torres enacts law starting cemetery fund

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres last Wednesday enacted a law that seeks to start a revolving fund for the maintenance and safe money keeping of a cemetery for fees associated with veterans.

Torres enacted Rep. Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero’s (Ind-Saipan) House Bill 20-70, which seeks to create a special account called the CNMI Veterans Cemetery revolving fund. The bill is now known as Public Law 20-49.

The fund would contain fees, donations, or contributions to the Veteran’s Cemetery in Marpi and shall be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery and its associated facilities without legislative appropriation. The fund is separate from the general fund.

The fund would also be composed of fees collected for the registration and use of U.S. Armed Forces veteran vehicles license plates.

The cemetery grounds and facilities are to be maintained by the Office of Military Liaison and Veterans Affairs, headed by executive officer Oscar Torres.
