Gov. Ralph DLG Torres congratulated Rep. Tina E. Sablan last Friday after she was chosen by the NMI Democratic Party as their candidate for governor in the November 2022 general elections.

“I want to wish [her well and] not just her but to everyone who puts their name into this 2022 election,” said Torres when asked during his regular radio press briefing about the Democratic Party’s endorsement of Sablan as their standard bearer.

The governor said they are looking forward to a clean campaign from all those that will be running, not just in the gubernatorial race but across all positions, whether it’s for delegate, senator, mayor, representatives and even down to municipal councilors.

“We wish to have a good campaign moving forward,” he said.

The 18-member Central Executive Committee of the NMI Democratic Party unanimously approved the recommendation of their Gubernatorial Search Committee to select Sablan as their candidate in 2022. The party reportedly received five letters of intent to run for governor under the party.

The Central Executive Committee also voted unanimously for Gregorio Kilili Sablan, who is the only one who filed a letter of intent to run for the delegate post under the Democratic Party.

Torres and Sen. Vinnie Vinson Flores Sablan are the standard- bearer of the NMI Republican Party as governor and lieutenant governor, respectively.

Torres’ previous running-mate, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, has also announced that he will be running for governor with Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang as his running-mate under an independent ticket.
