Torres is Commerce acting CSD director
The Central Statistics Division of the CNMI Department of Commerce has an acting director.
Tom Torres, who has been with Commerce for more than 10 years, is now in acting capacity after Alfonsis Sound left the position around mid-August last year.
Torres started at CSD in 1991 and left in 1999 to serve the local labor and immigration office. He was the Labor and Immigration Identification and Documentation System director until federal immigration took over in 2009.
He came back to Commerce during the early part of 2012, during the time when the department started their information technology unit.
“He was heading that unit which is an extension of the Secretary’s Office. As we moved forward with the departure of our director, Alfonsis Sound, I tasked him to be the acting director to help out the team,” Commerce Secretary Mark Rabauliman said.
Torres started serving as acting CSD director sometime around the beginning of the year.
Aside from his Cabinet duties, Rabauliman has been serving as the acting director when Sound left and prior to Torres’ assignment to the role.
In September, he has stated their plans to look into getting someone from their office to be the acting director in the interim due to the challenges brought by Typhoon Soudelor to their workflow.
