Tinian lawmakers OK $2 to $5 vehicle fee

The four-member Tinian and Aguiguan Legislative Delegation passed last week a measure imposing a Tinian vehicular environmental impact fee of $2 for every tourist that rides on scooter rentals and $5 for each tourist that rides on rental cars, all-terrain vehicles, tour buses, or vans.

A similar bill was previously vetoed by the governor but Rep. Trenton Conner (Ind-Tinian) said he took into consideration the governor’s concerns to make the bill a more workable and acceptable one.

Conner’s House Local Bill 18-47, Draft 1 passed the Tinian delegation by a vote of 4-0. It now goes to the governor for action.

Fees collected from the bill, once enacted into law, will be used for the Tinian Tourism and Beautification Revolving Fund for the development, improvement, and maintenance of various cultural and historical sites on Tinian.

The proposed fee will be collected by the business vendor for every customer who rides on roads in a tour bus or van, and who use scooters or ATVs on Tinian and Aguiguan.

The proposed fee will be assessed for each individual, “no more than one time per visit, up to 30 days.”

The fees collected are to be considered locally generated revenue and as such, will be managed exclusively by the Tinian Treasury.
