Five Tinian independents filed their petitions for candidacy for the upcoming November elections at the Commonwealth Election Commission Tuesday at the Tinian Court House.

The group of independent candidates who filed their certificates of candidacy was led by former two-term senator Henry Hofschneider San Nicolas. San Nicolas, a shareholder of SN-5 Shipping, is running for the Senate.

Bilingual specialist Diana Hocog Borja is running for a seat in the House of Representatives, while retired police officer and cattleman Sylvestre Hofschneider Palacios Jr. is throwing his hat in the political arena by running for Tinian Municipal Council.

Deborah Aldan Fleming will also be running for the local municipal council. She is the owner of the Fleming Hotel.

Another prominent businessman running for public office is Phillip Mendiola Long. The CEO of Bridge Investment Group is gunning for a seat in the Tinian Municipal Council.

San Nicolas said, “I have decided to run in this election because Tinian is moving backward, not forward. I feel that my experience in the Legislature and in the Tinian business community will help Tinian begin to make some real progress, again. We independents are the right choice for this election.”

Borja, who is currently a member of the Tinian Municipal Council, said, “I have decided to run for the House of Representatives because Tinian needs effective leadership in the House, where good legislation begins. Right now, our people are hurting. Our dream of economic prosperity through casino gaming has been dashed. With support from our independent candidates for the next municipal council, I am confident that we can get Tinian moving forward again.
