Tinian holds 4th Youth Shoreline Fishing Derby

Tinian hosted its 4th Annual Youth Shoreline Fishing Derby last July 22, 2018, with 35 youngsters between the ages of 6 and 17 joining the overnight event at Kammer Beach.

“For most of these anxious young participants and their parents, this cliff fishing derby is not only a sports competition but also a fun island pastime,” said MVA field operations supervisor Vida Borja.

Organized by the 16th Tinian Municipal Council, Division of Fish & Wildlife, and the Marianas Visitors Authority, the event began at 6pm on July 22 and ended at 6am on July 23.

For only $5, participants received an invitation to the awards banquet, and the opportunity to vie for $2,000 in cash prizes in different categories. The derby was divided into three age categories: ages 6-9, ages 10-14, and ages 15-17.

Biggest Catch went to Carther Joe Cruz for 6-9 year-olds, Ezra dela Cruz for 10-13 year-olds, and Glen Matalog for the 14-17 year-olds.

Most Weight prizes in the younger category went to Cather Joe Cruz, Francisco Moses, and Trevin Evangelista, in descending order.

Most Variety prizes went to, in descending order: Trevin Evangelista, Francisco Moses, and Carther Joe Crus.

Also in descending order in the Age 10-14 category, Most Weight prizes went to Christopher King Jr., Ethan Palacios, and John Cabrera. Most Variety prizes went to Christopher King Jr., Ethan Palacios, and John Cabrera.

In the Ages 15-17 category, Most Weight prizes went to Glen Matalog, Rudy Sablan, and Peter “Kutz” Dela Cruz, in descending order. Most Variety went to Rudy Sablan, Glen Matlaog, and Peter “Kutz” Dela Cruz, in descending order.

All non-winners received a Saipan-da backpack with school supplies.


The next Youth Shoreline Fishing Derby is tentatively scheduled for July 3-4, 2019. (MVA)
