Tinian clear; now waiting on FEMA

Typhoon Soudelor’s destructive winds mostly spared Tinian while leaving Saipan a wasteland of broken homes, fallen trees, and telephone poles.

Tinian Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas said that power and water services are now fully restored on the island.

“Today, we shut down our Mayor’s Operation Center at 5pm and all of our assessment have been provided to the Emergency Operation Center on Saipan. We have been visited by the Army Corps of Engineers and they did an assessment of Tinian’s infrastructure,” San Nicolas said.

“We are about almost complete in our cleanup and some that still remains to be cleaned are in the north area. At least three houses were severely damaged and other houses just had minor damage. As of now two families are being helped,” he added.

San Nicolas said they are now focused on waiting for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help the island and the community of Tinian is now focused on working together to help Saipan.

Assessment on Tinian started on Aug. 3 with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA focusing first on critical facilities such as the hospital, schools, police, airport, and fire department.

Initial assessment saw that a few homes were heavily damaged and about 16 people were displaced.

Several poles were down but are now fixed.

“We are focused on working together to help Saipan. There are a handful of families whose homes were seriously damaged by the typhoon and we’re working with American Red Cross-NMI Chapter here on Tinian and look forward to meeting with FEMA,” San Nicolas said.
