“People want leaders they can trust. Leaders who listen. Leaders who do their research before acting on bills,” according to former House lawmaker Christina “Tina” Sablan shortly after she filed her candidacy last Wednesday as an independent for a precinct 2 seat in the House of Representatives.

Precinct 2 covers Susupe, Chalan Kanoa, Finasisu, As Lito, and As Perdido.

Sablan was accompanied by her parents, family members, and supporters at the Commonwealth Election Commission in Susupe during her submission of petition for nomination.

Former governor Juan N. Babauta and Dr. Rita Sablan, who are seeking election as governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, also came to support along with several independent candidates for this Nov. 6 general election. Democratic Party chair Daniel Quitugua and other Democratic officials were also present.

In her statement, Sablan said people want leaders who put the wellbeing of the community first above special interests and self-interests.

She said since beginning this journey to the Legislature, she has been meeting people every day—in their homes, stores, beach, Laundromat.

Sablan said she has been taking this time to really listen to the people—their concerns, ideas, and hopes.

Sablan said she has noticed some common themes.

“People want a government that works for them. A government that pays its bills and honors its obligations,” she pointed out.

The former lawmaker said people want a government that prioritizes investments in the things that improve the quality of life for all—healthcare, public infrastructure, public schools, community college, trade school, safety, and cleanliness of the villages.

“People want an economy that works for them. An economy that makes life better for all and not just a few,” she said.

Sablan said people want an economy that is sustainable—driven by the vision of the community, the people who live in the Commonwealth.

She stressed that they want development that respects the island culture and environment.

Sablan said she is committed to being open and transparent as a candidate and as a legislator, and to pushing for greater transparency and accountability from all public officials.

“I am committed to reaching out and listening to constituents, and doing my research and due diligence before I make decisions,” she said.

Sablan added that she is committed to putting the wellbeing of the community first, and working for a safer, healthier, and more beautiful Marianas that “we can be proud of.”

Sablan used to serve as a member of the 16th House of Representatives. She previously worked as a news reporter and anchor for KSPN2. She is currently the deputy communications director and outreach coordinator for Delegate Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (Ind-MP).
