DUE TO PENDING PERMIT

Thursday Market still can’t operate

The Thursday Market, which was supposed to relocate to Paseo de Marianas in Garapan, will still not operate today.

According to Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ Commonwealth Council for Arts executive director Angel Hocog, they are still waiting for their permit from the Department of Public Lands.

Hocog said they have already submitted the requirements for the permit for a while now.

“Their staff told us [the application is] with the secretary already,” Hocog said. “That’s what’s holding us back.”

It has been almost two months since the weekly market has not been in operation. It last opened at the Garapan Fishing Base on June 11, 2015.

The Thursday Market gave way to the Liberation Festivities, which is currently using the same location and will be there until Aug. 16.

The weekly market was supposed to move back to its original location at the Paseo de Marianas but since it hasn’t secured its permit yet, they can’t operate.

Hocog added that they still have to fix some electrical lining once they secure the permit. He said they didn’t want to start the repairs until they got the approval.

Since the Liberation Festivities only have more than two weeks until it closes, Hocog said they “might as well wait for them to move out and go on with our usual operations.”
