Yesterday’s weather was characterized by a strong thunderstorm over eastern Saipan waters, affecting Saipan coastal waters.

Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at CNMI Emergency Operations Center-State Warning Point, satellite imagery indicated that the strong thunderstorm was capable of producing winds of around 30 knots. This thunderstorm was located 50 nautical miles east of the Tanapag buoy. The thunderstorm was moving west-southwest.

Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and frequent lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes.

Intense lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible. Keep away from ungrounded metal objects. (PR)
