Joeten Charitable Foundation has always been involved with the annual Marianas March Against Cancer as a title sponsor, having made a donation in cash and in kind totaling $5,000 for this year’s event.

This year, the foundation thought of doing something different and decided to form a MMAC team with Marianas High School, which has had a long history with the annual signature fundraising event of the Commonwealth Cancer Association.

Hearing that MHS is looking for a sponsor, Joeten Charitable Foundation “immediately reached out to them and everything worked out perfectly.”

Team Joeten/Marianas High School is led by team captains Frannie Demapan, Joeten marketing manager and buyer, and MHS students Michelle Ngirbabul and Audrey Ada.

To raise funds for the largest cancer event in the CNMI, the team plans to sell drinks and snacks as well as host fun activities and games for children.

For the team, their favorite and fun parts of the MMAC event is not just the race to complete the most laps, but also the lighting of the luminaries which commemorate those who have been directly affected by cancer.

“The lighting of the luminaries is such an amazing moment because out of the darkness, you see all these lights flicker across the entire field and you realize that each candle represents a person who has battled or continues to battle cancer. The scene is shocking but also comforting to know that you’re not alone in this epic fight,” said Team Joeten/Marianas High School.

The team added that signing up as a team is not for free “but it’s well worth it.”

“Do it for your parents, siblings, friends, or coworkers. It takes time and effort to build a team but it’s nothing compared to the effort individuals have to put forth each day to battle cancer,” the team said.
