Teachers, Originals win debuts
Two more squads had a good start in the 33rd season of the Saipan Rocball League as the Teachers and Originals juiced-out their respective opponents last week at the Marianas High School court.
Originals debuted ahead of the Teachers, prevailing against Nangka Namu last Wednesday, 51-22. Originals won all four sets for the easy juiced-out victory, which is handed to the team that had the lead at the end of regulation and also won the fourth set.
In the opening set, Originals engaged Nangka Namu in a close match before pulling off a 13-9 win. In the second, Originals cruised to a 13-3 triumph before posting another 13-9 victory in the penultimate set. In the fourth and final set, Nangka Namu gave its best shot in the hopes of forcing the overtime, but Originals held its ground and escaped with a 12-11 win to end the match early.
The Originals-Nangka Namu game produced seven aces, five xunks, and two kees.
In the other match last week, Jacoby Winkfield registered 15 points to power the Teachers to a 53-25 win against A-Team.
Winkfield top-scored for the Teachers after collecting four aces, two kees, and one goal in last Thursday’s match. There were six other goals, one jam, and four kees made in the Teachers-A-Team tiff.
The Teachers set up the juiced-out win after dominating A-Team in the first three sets, 14-8, 13-4, and 13-4. In the final set, A-Team made a little headway before allowing the Teachers to complete the sweep with a 13-9 victory.
Only two games were played in the league last week, as the two other matches were rained-out. The Teachers and Originals joined opening week winners Block Magic and Rebels in the early lead. Two more squads—the Veterans and Roc-Wid-It— have yet to debut in this season’s rocball league.
