Tropical Depression 27W moved closer to the Marianas yesterday and may pass southwest of Guam today, Tuesday, causing possible minor damage in Guam and the Northern Marianas.

As of 5pm yesterday, a tropical storm watch remained in effect for Guam, Rota, and surrounding coastal waters.

As of 2:15pm yesterday, acting governor Victor B. Hocog “maintained” Tropical Storm Condition 3 for Rota because of the anticipated threat.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, Tropical Depression 27W is not expected to significantly intensify Monday night, but some gradual intensification is expected today, Tuesday, and Wednesday, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam.

There is still much uncertainty on how close Tropical Depression 27W will pass Guam, Rota, or locations in Chuuk and Yap states.

As of 4pm yesterday, the center of 27W was 330 miles south-southeast of Guam, 360 miles south-southeast of Rota, 410 miles south of Tinian, 415 miles south of Saipan, 125 miles north of Satawal, and 355 miles west-northwest of Chuuk.

For Guam and Rota, the weather service said that seas will build to between 12 and 14 feet today, Tuesday, and surf of 10 to 14 feet is possible along north and west facing reefs.

For Rota, Saipan, and Tinian, seas of 9 to 12 feet will continue through Wednesday, then begin to slowly diminish Wednesday night and should fall below hazardous levels Thursday.

The U.S. National Weather Service and the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency advised inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, to avoid sailing in these conditions.
