Taya Tuesdays campaign results in 213,016 plastic bags not used
As a result of eight months of Taya Plastic Tuesdays, 213,016 plastic bags have been saved through the use of reusable bags, boxes, and other alternatives. Also exciting is that shoppers are not limiting their use of reusable bags to Tuesdays. They are bringing them in throughout the week. Joeten records show that 17, 995 reusable bags were brought in to their stores during the period (Feb. 24, 2015 through Oct. 27, 2015) through its partnership with Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance. These numbers are impressive for the CNMI’s first effort to support reusable bags.
“Joeten stays committed to supporting conservation efforts in the CNMI. MINA has been a great partner in achieving our green efforts. We are working to reduce the CNMI’S reliance on plastic bags,” said Bo Palacios, business development manager.
In February, Tuesdays became “No Plastic Bag Day” at Joeten. Every Tuesday, Joeten grocery stores and their customers say no to plastic bags by using boxes, paper bags, or reusable shopping bags. On this day, Joeten does not distribute any plastic bags. If you forget your bag and choose not to use a free box, on Tuesdays Joeten stores charge 10 cents for a paper bag and sell MINA-Joeten eco bags for 99 cents (any other day they are $1.99). A portion of the proceeds support MINA’s efforts to protect and preserve our natural environment.
Plastic is responsible for killing more than 100,000 marine mammals every year. Let’s reduce our reliance on single-use plastic bags and shop with a reusable shopping bag instead! Together, as a community, we can help eliminate plastic pollution in the CNMI.
MINA is also excited to announce the 2nd Plastic Bag Challenge 12 Days of Giveaways. Starting in December this will give the island community a chance to win daily prizes just by “choosing to reuse.” More details to follow.
