Tania Tan is laying waste to records left and right, this time resetting the CNMI outdoor 5000m record after running a 18:51.02 in the 56th Annual Colonial Relays
Women’s 5000 Run University at the College of William and Mary last April 1.
Suiting up for Fordham University, the 20-year-old junior eclipsed the 19:24 set by Noriko Jim in June 26, 2006 at the Micronesian Games on Saipan.
“I’m tired… I was actually hoping to run a faster time, but it’s okay. Each race is a learning experience. I’m just going to keep putting myself out there, training each day, and hopefully it pays off in the end… [My] strategy was just to go out there and race,” said Tan in social media message to Saipan Tribune.
Asked if her breaking records nearly every month is a good sign leading up to her participation in the Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games 2022, Tan said she’s just looking forward to represent her home islands in the quadrennial event.
“I actually am excited! I’m excited to race on our newly renovated track. Coming home in about a month!” said the Saipan International School alumnae.
CNMI National Athletics coach Dr. Ron Snyder said he can’t wait for Tan to return home and start training with the CNMI National Athletics Team.
“I am so looking forward to training Tania again for the Mini Games. I was so proud when she left SIS and decided to keep running at Fordham. She is a perfect lesson of what hard work and determination can do. Her times at the last two meets position her well for a medal at the Mini Games and I can’t wait until she starts her training with the rest of the national team. She will definitely push and inspire them all to new heights. Also, Tania has two more years of eligibility at university and I hope I might just have the opportunity to update the records a few more times. So, as my typical Facebook posts end…‘Go Tania!’” he said.
A week after her record-setting 5000m run, Tan also set a new outdoor track record after completing the 10,000m in 39:41 at the Metropolitan Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Last March 19, Tan also reset the 3,000m outdoor record with a time of 10:58.76 at the Stony Brook Snow Flake Classic, which bested her former record set at the Micronesian Championships on Saipan. The 5,000m indoor CNMI record also fell when she ran the distance with a time of 18:52:21 at the Metropolitan Championship last Feb. 4.
