Tan Holdings romped past McDonald’s, 83-69, in Game 1 of their semis series in the 2nd JP World Corp. Customer Appreciation Basketball League last Friday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Tan Holdings will be gunning for a sweep in their best-of-three semis duel tonight, while McDonald’s hopes to remain in contention with a win in Game 2.
The top-ranked Tan Holdings set up the easy win and moved closer to a finals appearance in the nine-team league after starting to dominate the series opener in the second quarter. Tan Holdings more than doubled up McDonald’s in the pivotal period, 27-13, to turn a 25-26 deficit to a promising 52-39 halftime advantage.
R.J. Nonato sparked the breakaway, scoring 8 of his 16 points in the second canto. He was amply supported by his teammates, as six other Tan Holdings players hit the board in that quarter. McDonald’s, which took the shaky 1-point lead at the end of the first frame after Joseph Achas’ triple, failed to keep up with Tan Holdings on offense, as the former was held to five field goals in the second.
Only brothers Michael and Joseph Achas converted more than one basket for McDonald’s in the second quarter and the team continued to bleed for points in the third, tallying 10 markers. The third period letdown saw only Michael scoring more than 2 points for McDonald’s with his two field goals and a pair of free throws. Gil Gapor and McClain Achas knocked in the two other baskets for McDonald’s.
Tan Holdings also had some problems on its offense in the third, but Matt Duenas’ 8 points off the team’s 14 were enough to push the lead to 17, 66-49 going into the final canto.
Tan Holdings went on to increase the advantage to as high as 22 points, 74-52, before allowing McDonald’s to pick up garbage points in the remaining minutes of Game 1.
Meanwhile, Joeten and Commonwealth Utilities Corp. also played their semis series opener last Friday and results of the match will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Tuesday edition.
