Tagaman caps exciting races on Saipan

Triathlon still ruled the week with the staging of the 2012 Tagaman Triathlon, the final leg of Saipan’s trifecta of races.
United Kingdom pro Jacqui Slack and France’s Cedric Lassonde topped Tagaman, leaving Saipan with a win after falling short in XTERRA Saipan, Guam, and the Philippines. Tagaman completed the island’s trio of March races, which included the Saipan Marathon and XTERRA Saipan.
Slack pulled off an upset over Switzerland’s Renata Bucher, Austria’s Carina Wasle, and Saipan’s very own Mieko Carey. In the men’s division, Lassonde also stunned his favored foe-Australia’s Ben Allen, who swept the three XTERRA races in March before fatigue took its toll on him in Tagaman.
Besides the off-island triathletes, local bets also proved their worth in Tagaman after winning their respective divisions. The age group winners include Tyce Mister, Kaisei Toda, Angelo Villagomez, and John Douglas, while Lewie Tenorio only placed second in his division, but was the first Saipan non-pro finisher.
In the relay, the trio of swimmer Kento Akimaru, biker Aldrin Sta. Ana, and runner Mamiko Oshima-Berger ruled the 13-squad field.
Other competitions on Saipan continued last week.
In the Saipan Major League, the Northern Yankees’ Josh Jones was just one short of tying the SML record in strikeouts with his 21. He led the Yankees to a 15-1 demolition of the IT&E Fielders at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
Still at the “Tan Ko” field, the Red Sox and Fielders recorded separate wins in the Junior League. Other winners include the Senior League’s Ol’Aces and Hunters, while in the Majors at the “Tan Ge” field, the Braves, Commets, Ol’Aces, Enforcers, and Falcons topped their respective foes.
In soccer, MP United Silver completed the sweep of the first round of the boys U15 league after a 14-0 rout of the Tan Holdings FC last week. Matansa and Paire also won in the boys U15 game, while MP United and Paire triumphed in the boys U18.
In the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization, the boys soccer and girls fast-pitch softball league kicked off, while Northern Marianas Athletics also started the All Schools qualifying tournaments.
