A total of 139 students finished high school at Saipan Southern High School last Thursday, with valedictorian Marylyn Y. Tabuena leading the graduates in their march toward higher education.

Tabuena, who plans to take up accounting at the Northern Marianas College, plans to work here first. “After two years, I am planning to go to Washington [state] for my master’s.”

Tabuena also received the lieutenant governor’s Leadership Award and the Board of Education award.

“I was so surprised I had to ask the administrator if they were joking with me. I did not expect to be valedictorian at all. I was expecting Top 10 at least but when I heard the news I was so thankful,” she said, adding that she just found out about it a few days ago.

Salutatorian Ezekiel V. Rafanan plans to attend the University of Portland in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

“From then on, I plan to go to graduate school or go to the Naval Academy,” he said.

When asked if he has plans to return, Rafanan said that all he has planned for so far is getting to college. “Once I finish, I’d see where it goes from there,” he added.

Rafanan, who also got the lieutenant governor’s Leadership Award, the Commissioner’s Award, and the governor’s Leadership Award, is interested in pursuing a master’s degree in computer science or any form of engineering.

Desirae I. Deleon Guerrero received the SSHS Principal’s Award.
