SYP’s July mixer focuses on current CNMI issues
The Saipan Young Professionals Committee held its July mixer at Club C inside Kanoa Resort. In addition to professional networking, the Saipan Young Professional members discussed current issues within the CNMI. They applauded the efforts of the CNMI Division of Customs Services in the recent seizure of drugs estimated at a street value of $4 million. They recognized the successful joint collaboration of all the agencies involved in the recent seizure, including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agencies, FBI, local law enforcement and other special agents. SYP member Rose Aldan stated that the recent event has helped her build “confidence in our government.” Other SYP members echoed the importance of working together as a community to help fight the war on drugs.

SYP members also recognized Josephine Mesta of Hyatt Regency Saipan on her recent nomination for First Hawaiian Bank’s Businesswoman of the Year Award. SYP Chairwoman Mable Ayuyu shared details of the prestigious annual award and pointed out a few women and past nominees including Vicky Benavente of PIC Saipan, Marcia Ayuyu of McDonald’s Saipan and Pacifica Insurance’s Shirley Sablan, who was named as the 2014 First Hawaiian Bank Businesswoman of the Year. SYP member Vicky Aldan noted that female leaders help inspire young professionals to work hard and to continue to strive for success.
SYP members also discussed the recent opening of Best Sunshine Live. They talked about the effects that it will have on future tourism as well as the critical need for government leaders to look into areas such as possible airport expansion and infrastructure. In terms of employment, they discussed that Best Sunshine has provided an opportunity for employment, especially for the local workforce. With many economic changes on the horizon, they stated that there is a need to make decisions in anticipation of increased traffic to the CNMI.
“Change will happen and it’s important to position ourselves to be ready for what lies ahead,” said Ayuyu.
Next month, the Saipan Young Professionals will be focusing on the theme of education and will hear from different leaders within the education system. On Aug. 8, the committee will partner with the Salvation Army in their “Soup Kitchen” event as part of their community service and outreach.
