The Saipan Young Professionals Committee featured two environmentally themed speakers for their “Inspirational Speakers Night” series of events.

This month, the SYP Committee invited representatives from the Micronesian Islands Nature Alliance and Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality to share the importance of preserving our island’s natural resources. The event was held in the conference room at the Saipan Chamber of Commerce last June 18.

Elizabeth “Becky” Furey, representative of MINA, shared the different programs they have initiated to promote a “green” environment for our island. Over the past several years, MINA has implemented programs such as “Adopt a Bin,” the “Tasi Watch Program,” “Taya Plastic Tuesdays,” and their annual “Green Gala,” an event aimed toward raising funds for the non-profit organization.

Furey stressed the importance of community involvement through volunteering and of increased outreach to students. At the end of her presentation, Furey and MINA executive director Brooke Nevitt encouraged SYP members to “be environmental stewards” for the Marianas Islands. She hopes that MINA’s ongoing programs would inspire young professionals to be mindful of their environment and to be active members to keep our islands beautiful.

Thursday’s event also featured BECQ manager Ray Masga. He provided insight on BECQ’s mission and the important role that their agency plays in the community. Masga elaborated on BECQ’s recent projects which include the Dogas Stream Restoration Project in Tanapag, a project assisted by members of the community and other government agencies. He also shared ways in which BECQ educates young minds through their annual Environmental Awareness Month Expo, an event dedicated to providing information about the environment to young students.

Both presentations provided SYP members with an in-depth look at the importance of making smart and environmentally friendly choices to affect change.
