Despite notice of Typhoon Atsani, about 15 SYP members and friends helped to prepare and serve approximately 1,731 meals to feed families affected by Typhoon Soudelor.

“I absolutely love it! It fills me with so much joy to help my neighbors in need and to have the opportunity to share God’s love,” says volunteer Stephen Nowell. Nowell has been one of the few volunteers who has chosen to dedicate his time to volunteering each weekend.

SYP co-chair Bobby Cruz adds, “So many of our family and community members are doing their part to help. If you want to see positive change take shape, you ought to do your part to make that change a reality.”

Cruz reiterated the committee’s commitment to providing direct assistance to families in need. In keeping with their mission, the SYP Committee has chosen to volunteer at the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen each weekend for the month of August leading into September.

When asked about volunteering for other relief programs, SYP chair Mable Ayuyu stated that their committee’s efforts extend to the Salvation Army and beyond.

“Along with volunteering at the soup kitchen, a few of our SYP members have found individual ways to help our community. In recent weeks, some of our members have volunteered to assist in efforts led by groups like the American Red Cross.”

Ayuyu thanks the SYP members for their continuous support as the island continues to make progress.

“Recovery takes time but there are organizations like SYP, the American Red Cross, FEMA, Karidat and the Salvation Army that are dedicated to providing direct assistance. There are also emerging grassroots organizations like United 4 Saipan that truly make a positive difference in the lives of many,” said Ayuyu. “Our committee would like to encourage all young professionals to help restore and rebuild.”
