Last Thursday, the SYP Committee invited Marcia Ayuyu, owner/operator of the McDonald’s Restaurants of Saipan to share her experience of owning and operating a franchise business. She shared the interesting dynamic of working with her family as well as the challenges and rewards of operating a quick service restaurant.

SYP members were also given the opportunity to tour the McDonald’s Middle Road restaurant location to understand the operational aspect of a franchise restaurant.

Marcia Ayuyu emphasized the importance of community service and how McDonald’s plays an active role in the CNMI. She also encouraged aspiring female entrepreneurs to take a proactive role and to lead by example. In 2012, Marcia Ayuyu was named the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s Businessperson of the Year.

The event also featured Joey Tudela, part-owner of a gym called “GetFitCNMI.” In his presentation, Tudela introduced the young professionals to the world of “crossfit.” He gave tips and advice for young entrepreneurs interested in starting their own business in the CNMI and maintaining a full-time job. Aside from being a crossfit trainer, Tudela is also an assistant project manager for a local engineering firm.

“Four years ago, a friend of mine had an idea to open a crossfit gym. We got together, along with a few friends and started ‘GetFitCNMI’ with only about 20 members. Now we’re in a large warehouse with more members,” Tudela said. His advice to young professionals is to “pursue a project that you are passionate about.”

Each month, the Saipan Young Professionals Committee hopes to feature inspirational speakers that will share their experience and wisdom.

“We hope to take the experiences of successful entrepreneurs and use it to motivate us to build a brighter future for our islands,” Mable Ayuyu said.
