Down syndrome—love knows no bounds

Share

Having a brother with down syndrome has helped me realize that children born with disabilities are here on earth for the same reasons we all are which include but are not limited to living life to its fullest.

With that said, I was browsing the Internet one day and I red the poem below which I find relevant and very touching. It is written by an unknown author—I hope you enjoy:

“My face may be different But my feelings the same,
I laugh and I cry, and I take pride in my gains
I was sent here among you to teach you to love,
And God in the heavens looks down from above,
To him I’m no different his love knows no bounds,
It’s those here among you in cities and towns,
They judge me by standards that man has imparted,
But these families I’ve chosen will help me get started,
For I’m one of his children so special and few,
That came here to learn the same lessons as you,
That love is acceptance it must come from the heart,
We all have the same purpose though not the same start,
The Lord gave my life to love and embrace,
And I’ll do it as you do just at my own pace.”

Down syndrome as defined by Google, also called Trisomy 21, is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. The physical features and medical problems associated with down syndrome was named after John Langdon Down, a British doctor who, in 1866 provided the description of the condition.

From personal experience, I can say that my brother teaches me love everyday and that my love for him “knows no bounds.”
