Swimmer nearly drowns at Grotto
A 30-year-old man who was swimming with three friends nearly drowned at Grotto in Marpi last Saturday afternoon.
The victim, a Chinese national, was transported by first responders to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was admitted for further observation.
Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Jason Tarkong said that police police responded to Grotto on Saturday at 2:53pm where a possible drowning incident was reported.
Tarkong said police learned that the victim had been swimming with three friends when they later found him floating face up and unconscious. They brought him to shore, where he regained consciousness.
The victim and friends had gone to the Grotto at 2pm. As the water was rough, the victim, who was wearing a life vest, swallowed water, causing him to lose consciousness.
DFEMS spokesman Derek Gersonde said they received a call from DPS 911 on Saturday at 2:55pm of a near drowning incident at Grotto. Gersonde said that medics from the Garapan Fire Station arrived at Grotto at 3:11pm.
Medics found the victim, who was wearing a life jacket, complaining of head pain.
