Three Tsunami Saipan Swimming Center bets capped the 2011-2012 season with record-breaking swims in the 2012 Guam Championships held over the weekend at the Hagatna Pool.
Miku Tammy crushed four marks in the girls 9 to 10 age group, while brothers Ryuto and Kaito Yanai reset records in the boys U8 and 11 to 12 divisions.
Ten-year-old Tammy’s first record came in the 100m freestyle event where she timed in at 1:13.80, about three seconds faster than the former mark of Myana Welch (1:16.76/March 28, 2000). Then in the 100m butterfly race, the Tsunami Saipan swimmer clocked in at 1:20.69, shattering the 1:28.57 Amanda Johnson set on March 28, 2002.
Tammy’s third record was also in the butterfly stroke-the 50m. She posted 35.61 seconds, surpassing her own record (37.64 seconds) logged on Feb. 18, 2012. For her fourth mark-the 200m backstroke-Tammy tallied 2:57.03, which Northern Marianas Swimming Federation recognized as a new entry in the CNMI record books.
Besides her record swims, Tammy also took the overall championship in the girls U10 age group of the two-day competition. She gained the top honors in her age group after winning gold medals in six events-50m freestyle (34.17 seconds), 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke (1:22.95), and 200m backstroke.
Ryuto Yanai also ruled the boys U10 division, as he reigned in four events, including his record swim in the 100m freestyle, and won silver medals in two other races. The younger Yanai finished the 100m freestyle in 1:15.18, eclipsing his own mark (1:15.69) made on March 14, 2012.
Besides winning the 100m freestyle, Ryuto also claimed gold medals in the 50m freestyle (34.23 seconds), 100m butterfly (1:26.36), and 50m breaststroke (46.02 seconds). Then his silver medals came from the 200m freestyle (2:42.48) and 100m backstroke (1:32.05).
Ryuto’s eldest brother, Kaito, raced in six individual events, resetting his own mark and CNMI age group record in 100m breaststroke after timing in at 1:18.81. Kaito’s previous record was 1:19.26 and posted on Dec. 3, 2011.
Kaito won the 100m breaststroke event and also the 50m freestyle (30.96 seconds), 200m freestyle (2:22.25), 50m breaststroke (46.02 seconds), 100m backstroke (1:17.55), and 200m individual medley (2:39.60) to claim the boys 11 to 12 championship.
Kaito and Ryuto and Tammy were among the 12 Tsunami Saipan swimmers who joined the last competition of the season, battling the various clubs in Guam and Saipan Swim Club representatives. Results of other Tsunami Saipan bets will be reported later this week.
