A surveillance camera led to the identification and arrest of a man shortly after he allegedly burglarized a car from customers of Joeten Superstore in San Jose on Monday afternoon.

Jeffrey B. Manalo, 35, was arrested for burglary, theft, and resisting arrest.

At a hearing yesterday, Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo imposed a $15,000 cash bail and set the preliminary hearing for April 20 at 9am.

Assistant public defender Tillman Clark was appointed as counsel for Manalo. Assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.

Police Detective Jesus K. Wabol stated in his report that an Asian male, his wife, and son went shopping at Joeten Superstore on Monday at 2:30pm.

Wabol said when the three were done shopping they went back to their car and noticed that their $20 in coins were missing from a plastic cup along with GentleMonster sunglasses worth $300.

The family went back inside the store to get assistance. The store’s manager told the family to call the police while she contacted their surveillance team to review their cameras.

The surveillance team later called the manager and told her that the suspect, who was wearing a yellow T-shirt and khaki short pants, was still within the store’s vicinity.

Police Officer Rudolfo Hermosilla responded to the store, where he met the supervisor and gave him the suspect’s descriptions.

Hermosilla approached the suspect who was near the front portion of the store. The suspect, who was later identified as Manalo, tried to run away, but the alert officer with the help of the supervisor managed to hold him.

Manalo struggled, but Police Officer Jason Tarkong also came and assisted in placing him in handcuffs.

One of the victims approached Hermosilla and pointed to Manalo’s pocket, where among the stolen items were placed.

Tarkong padded down Manalo’s pockets and recovered a sunglass case and cigarettes.

Hermosilla reviewed the surveillance camera’s footage, showing how Manalo broke into the victims’ car.
