‘Survival’ reality show filmed in Marianas premieres in S. Korea
“The Law of the Jungle,” a reality-documentary show produced by South Korea’s SBS network, will air nine weekly episodes filmed in the Marianas beginning Dec. 21, 2018. Nine episodes of the survival show “The Law of the Jungle” that were filmed in the Marianas premiered last Dec. 22 on South Korea’s SBS network.
The reality-documentary show features 15 celebrities, including Korean Olympic gold medalist swimmer Tawhwan Park, vying to survive on the islands of Tinian and Rota.
“SBS is Korea’s largest multi-media TV/radio network, and we were so excited to partner with them on the filming of ‘The Law of the Jungle’ in late October and early November this year,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. “We were amazed that they pushed through with the shooting schedule so soon after Super Typhoon Yutu, but it is fitting, as the show features celebrities sent to survive in remote locations around the world. Over the next nine weeks, we are looking forward to introducing some of the beautiful natural and hidden attractions of Tinian and Rota and showing Korea viewers that the Marianas is a beautiful place to visit, still.”
The project involved 50 people including the 15 celebrities and 35 production crew. The celebrities included show host Byungman Kim and other guests, including celebrity chef Yeonbok Lee. The production team stayed on Tinian from Oct. 31 to Nov 4 and on Rota from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11. Poor weather conditions prevented their stay on Aguijan.
The cast and crew visited locations on Tinian including Chulu Beach, Long Beach, Blow Hole, and Taga Beach, where they experienced swimming for survival, hunting, gathering food, building shelters and diving. On Rota, they filmed at Mochong Beach, Tonga Cave, old Japanese cannon site, and other locations. They also made their own shelters, fished in the ocean, and went free diving.
“A teaser of the show showing Park swimming in the crystal-clear ocean of Rota generated a huge buzz in Korea when it was aired last week,” said MVA marketing manager Thomas Kim. “Overall, the production team was greatly satisfied with its filming on Tinian and Rota, despite the effects of Yutu, and we are grateful for the partnership.”
Over 400 news and feature articles have been published on major online news platforms about the program’s filming in the Marianas. The show will air every Friday at 10pm on SBS from Dec. 21, 2018, to Feb. 22, 2019. (MVA)
