Bill “Supersandy” Riggen shot a net 68 at Kingfisher Golf Links last Dec. 4 to become the Ye Olde Saipanne Golfe Clubbe’s 2021 Champion Golfer of the Year.

Riggen’s 68 bested the second place finishers Timothy “Tex” Brasuell and Greg “Fossil” Koebel by a staggering nine strokes, leaving absolutely no doubt that the best man won this year’s tournament.

The outcome was in doubt only momentarily when, after finishing the front nine five shots clear of the field, Riggen double bogeyed both holes No. 10 and 11. However, any hope that his competitors could take in this brief lapse of form was slowly, steadily, and painfully quashed as Riggen completed the final seven holes in 1-over par. The championship effectively ended at the 17th, where three of his closest competitors came to grief with 4-over par 8s while Riggen calmly produced a par.

After the championship round, the Ye Olde Saipanne Golfe Clubbe members repaired to Wild Bill’s Bar and Grille for the presentation of the perpetual trophy, winner’s jacket, and prize money to their new Champion Golfer of the Year. The consensus was that Riggen’s spectacular round was attributable largely to the keeping of his prodigious drives on the fairway and out of the jungle, where he has spent much of his golfing career. Also, as noted by the Clubbe’s sage commissioner Michael “26” Deary, only once during the championship did Riggen produce one of the wretched chunks on an approach shot that so often plagues his game and horrifies his playing partners.

Rounding out the Top 5 in this year’s tournament were Deary, who shot a 78 and last year’s champion, Don “ChampChamp” Dunlop, with a 79. (PR)
