The Sunrisers kept their unbeaten record after yet another win against SCS Heavy Equipment, 85-76, during the second game in the 2nd Domino Lux International Fraternity/Miller Lite Basketball Invitational Friendship League last Saturday night at the Gualo Rai Basketbal Court.
The Sunrisers improved to a 6-0 record-a perfect mark that was put in danger early in the game when SCS took a 24-9 advantage in the first period. SCS got off to a strong start behind their four triples and Bon Tamayo’s 10 points, while only Mel Manibusan scored more than one field goal for the Sunrisers in the opening canto.
The Sunrisers then played catch up in the ensuing plays and then took a 68-60 lead in the first 5:20 of the fourth quarter when it started the final canto with a big 14-0 run. Manibusan anchored the rally, scoring six straight points in the run, while Josh Sablan added four and Jawn Joyner and Pete Lizama chipped in two apiece.
Tamayo ended SCS’ long drought with a banked shot with under five minutes left on the clock, but that was not enough to spark his team’s comeback. Jun Pantaleon converted back-to-back triples in SCS’ last ditch effort to recover, 76-78, but three straight points from Manibusan, followed by Lizama’s layup sealed the win for the Sunrisers. Jeff Quitigua’s jumper at the buzzer pegged the final score.
Manibusan top-scored for the Sunrisers with 23, while Lizama finished with 16. Three-point shooter Preston Basa and Joshn Sablan contributed 13 apiece with the latter draining back-to-back triples at the end of the second period to force a deadlock at halftime, 36-all.
Tamayo paced SCS with 20, including eight in the third period to give his team a 60-54 lead, going into the fourth frame. He added four more in the final canto and lacked support from his teammates, who were already tired from playing too many minutes. SCS had only seven players available for the game.
Mobil 89, Hite Beer 83
In the first game, Mobil pulled away in the second period and halted Hite Beer’s rally in the fourth en route to the six-point win.
Ahead by only three after the first canto, 21-18, Mobil outscored Hite Beer, 32-20, for a commanding 58-38 halftime lead. Ernie Moises and Jun Estolas conspired in the second-quarter breakaway, firing 11 and nine points, respectively.
Mobil kept the double-digit advantage in the third, as Estolas and company continued to find holes on Hite Beer’s defense. Mobil’s 17 point lead at the end of the third, 76-59, was enough to compensate their 13-point output in the fourth, 11 markers less than Hite Beer’s production.
Estolas finished with 26 for Mobil, while Hite’s Alex Lauron led all scorers with his 26. Mobil improved to a 2-1 record, while Hite fell to a 2-4 card.
