SANTA RITA, Guam—U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Commanding Officer Capt. Hans Sholley is inviting former residents of Sumay village and their descendants to a memorial Mass on NBG July 20.

The event is coordinated with the Santa Rita Mayor’s Office as part of the island’s

Liberation Day festivities.

The Mass will be held 11am at Sumay Cemetery, followed by a luncheon hosted by the mayor’s office. Former Sumay residents and descendants may contact the Santa Rita Mayor’s office to arrange access for the Mass.

Sumay village was once known as the “Pearl of the Island” before World War II. Evolving from a small fishing village to the agricultural and commercial hub for ships in the mid-1800s, it became an economically rich village by the 1930s. For the past several years, the NBG commanding officer has invited former residents and their descendants to hold a memorial Mass as part of Liberation Day ceremonies. (PR)
