Tasi to Table Inc. president Gene Weaver said the backbone of the recently held 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas were the student/volunteers that helped organize the fishing derby.

“The students did a tremendous job in this tournament. This is the 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas and every year it’s only getting better. We had over 50 student/volunteers today along with the advisers and they made this possible and they made this happen,” he said.

The Tasi to Table official said involving students in the organization of the non-profit’s events is part and parcel of its mission and vision when it was established back in July 2020.

“It’s something Tasi to Table is doing that is teaching them life lessons as far as organizing and how to put an event together is what the goal is here. It’s not only putting this event together but also learning from the Division of Fish and Wildlife data gathering and how to record fish. They did a tremendous job and my hat’s off to them again.”

Weaver said while Tasi to Table came three boats short of its expected 40-boat prediction for the 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas, he still deems the fishing derby a success.

“We had 37 boats. I was hoping for 40 but 37 is close enough to 40. The gas prices played a role and also the weather. In the morning it was a little rough, but there was a lot of wahoo caught.”

Aside from Weaver, also making up the Tasi to Table set of officers are vice president Dan Wollak, secretary Derik Reyes, and treasurer Alex Castro.

Salty Bandits topped last Saturday’s 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas with a catch weighing 48.2-lb. Taking second place was Mada Flyer with its 41.1-lb wahoo, while third and fourth place went to Team Red and Keilani-Ko with their fish weighing 40.2 lbs and 31.7 lbs, respectively. First place, second place, and third place went home with $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000, respectively, while fourth place got in-kind prizes. Mada Flyer also won another $500 for coming in first in the total weight award with the fish they caught tipping the scales at 96.8 lbs.

Mobil Oil Marianas and IT&E sponsored the 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas.
