Student films to take center stage at MCS film fest
The creative work of young filmmakers will take center stage Saturday night as Mount Carmel School organizes this year’s film festival.
The institution will showcase four student films in a drive-in style theater on the school’s south lawn on April 12, Saturday, in celebration of the 2014 MCS Film Festival.
To be featured in the event are the Dead Living, Saipan Pride Rice, Zero to Hero, and Dollarful of Fists.
Inspired by James Thurber’s short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the action-comedy Dead Living follows Dante Mitty as he struggles to cope with the reality of his mundane life by retreating into fantastic daydreams.
Directed by senior Dominic Travilla, the comedy Saipan Pride Rice shows what happens when a Chamorro boy and a Filipino girl tell their families that they are getting married.
Billed as an “epic teenage romantic comedy” and inspired by 1980s films by John Hughes, Zero to Hero tells of a geeky disc jockey named Zero who decides to run for prom king in order to land a dance with the girl of his dreams.
Finally, directed by 7th grader Peyton Gomez and playing with the title of Sergio Leone’s classic 1964 film A Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood, Dollarful of Fists is a simple story about two junior high students who get into an epic battle over a one-dollar bill.
On Saturday, audience members will be able to drive into the south lawn, or park in the Mount Carmel Cathedral field, to watch films that will be screened on the south wall of the middle school building. The festival is free to the general public. Viewers will be able to tune into the audio tracks of the films on 1140 AM, 92.1 FM, or www.cnmiradio.com, courtesy of the film festival’s major sponsor, KKMP Radio. Audience members that bring beach towels or blankets will also be able to sit in an area reserved for picnic-style seating in front of the screen.
Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club is sponsoring the event and will be selling concessions to help raise funds for the school’s Save the Stage campaign to renovate the school’s historic stage where the CNMI’s Covenant and Constitution were signed.
