Strong start for MHS 1, SIS 1

Marianas High School 1 and Saipan International School 1 were unbeaten in the opening weekend of the 2020-2021 Public School System Interscholastic 4v4 Beach Volleyball League, sweeping their first four matches in the girls high school division last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan sand courts.

MHS 1 debuted in the season with a 21-13 victory over Grace Christian Academy 2 on Court 2. The Dolphins played one more match on Court 2 and this time eased past MHS 4, 21-19. On Court 4, MHS 1 outclassed SIS 2, 21-18, and then topped MHS 2, 21-13, to close out the opening of the competition with a perfect 4-0 record.

SIS 1 duplicated MHS 1’s unblemished mark and one of those four wins was also against MHS 2 in the first game on Court 3, 21-12. The Geckos went on to play two more matches on the same court and won both to keep their undefeated record. For their second game, SIS 1 was pitted against Mt. Carmel School 2 and took a 21-10 victory, while GCA 1 was up next for the Geckos and the Mili Saiki and Bruce Berline-coached squad prevailed anew, 21-9.

From Court 3, SIS 1 moved to Court 1 to wrap up its opening weekend assignment and picked up where it left off, outclassing MCS 1, 21-14.

With SIS 1 and MHS 1 earning unbeaten records last Saturday, they share the early lead in the 10-team field, ahead of GCA 1 (3-2), MHS 2 (3-2), SIS 2 (3-2), GCA 2 (3-3), MCS 2 (1-3), MHS 3 (1-3), MCS 1 (1-3), and MHS 4 (0-4).

GCA 1 notched a pair of wins on Court 1, kicking off its campaign in the league with a 21-10 win over MCS 2 and then defeating MCS 1, 21-16. After losing to SIS 1 on Court 3, GCA 1 played on Court 4 to beat SIS 2, 21-13. GCA 1’s other loss in the opening weekend was against GCA 2 on Court 2, 13-21.

In other results on Court 2, MHS 3 edged MHS 4; 21-17; GCA 2 won over MHS 4; 21-13, and SIS 2 also prevailed against MHS 4, 21-11. MCS 1 handed MHS 4 its fourth loss last weekend on Court 1, 21-8, while the latter also topped MHS 2 on the same court, 21-5. GCA 2 and 1 notched victories, too on Court 1 with the former outclassing MCS 2, 21-12, and the latter beat MCS 1, 21-16.

On Court 3, MHS 2 slipped past MHS 3, 21-13, and MCS 2 nosed out MHS 3, 21-18. MHS 2 then moved to Court 4 and downed GCA 2, 21-17, while SIS 2 got twin wins on the same court—against MHS 3, 21-19 and over GCA 2, 21-3.

Meanwhile, the last set of preliminary games in the girls high school division won’t be played until Feb. 6, as this weekend’s matches will feature the boys teams. Preliminary games are scheduled to determine the participating squads’ rankings in the playoff round, which is set for Feb. 19 and 20 for the girls and Feb. 26 and 27 for the boys.
