DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS
Street Market cancelled yesterday
The weekly Thursday night Street Market was cancelled yesterday due to safety concerns as strong winds threatened the vendors’ tents, according to Commonwealth Council of Arts and Culture executive director Parker Yobei.
“It was too windy. It wasn’t safe for the tents to be set up,” he said, adding that his staff were setting up the tents for the Street Market early Thursday morning.
Usually, the tents are already set up at the Garapan Fishing Base as early as Wednesday afternoon.
Yobei clarified that a Street Market next week will go ahead—if the weather cooperates.
Yobei said that many of the tents were being blown away as they were setting them up yesterday, raising safety concerns.
The weekly Street Market just recently resumed after the devastation of Super Typhoon Yutu in late October 2018. Yobei had noted that the over 30 vendors were happy to be back.
“We are almost back to normalcy and the vendors are all happy to be back,” he said. “We just want to apologize to the public and the vendors for the cancellation but, because of safety concerns, we decided not to open the Street Market today,” Yobei said.
“We have encountered this problem in the past, so it is better be safe,” he added.
