Stranded fisherman rescued
Boating officers of the Department of Public Safety rescued a 19-year-old fisherman who was reported missing at Lau Lau Bay Saturday afternoon.
DPS spokesperson Jacqueline Rae Shepard said yesterday that the victim’s vitals were found normal upon checkup.
Shepard said that DPS dispatch received a call last Saturday at 3:55pm about an overdue fisherman at Lau Lau Bay. Boating Safety Unit officers responded and arrived at the scene at 4:05pm.
The 911 caller said he and five friends were spearfishing at Lau Lau Bay starting at 9am. However, when the group returned from the channel at noon, it was learned that the victim was missing.
DPS Boating Safety launched its rescue vessel, Impact, from Smiling Cove Marina and the Six jet boat from the Lau Lau Bay dive site at 4:10pm.
Shepard said the officers found the missing fisherman alive near the area where he was last seen at 4:55pm.
Shepard said the victim was not injured and was only waiting for his companions. The victim was loaded on the Six jet boat and brought back to the Lau Lau dve site.
Last April 17, a 53-year-old Japanese male reportedly drowned while diving at Lau Lau Bay.
Last March 9, Tian Tao, a 32-year-old Chinese male tourist drowned while swimming at Lau Lau Bay.
