Storm cleanup begins on Rota

HAGATNA, Guam (AP)—Both Guam and the island of Rota escaped major damage from Typhoon Vongfong.

Rota Mayor Melchor Mendiola said about 70 percent of the island’s residents lost power in the storm. But the Pacific Daily News reports about 75 percent of the homes had power restored by Monday afternoon.

There were no reported injuries, which Mendiola called a blessing. There was some minor structural damage, including tin roof sheets blown off garages.

Crews were dispatched to remove trees that fell on some island roads.

The storm began moving through Guam and the other islands stretched across a swath of the western Pacific before dawn Monday and left the region several hours later.

Rota, which is about 10.5 miles long and 3 miles wide, has about 2,500 residents, according to the last census.
