Stanley to seek re-election

Rep. Stanley Torres (Ind-Saipan), one of the longest serving lawmakers in the CNMI, will seek re-election in the Nov. 6 midterm elections.

“I am seeking re-election as an independent. I will run to continue to protect the interest of the people and not of any party,” Torres told Saipan Tribune. He first served in the 7th Legislature.

While Torres has been running as an independent, he has been aligned with the governor’s political party. He said it is not a coincidence that Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s former Covenant Party and now Republican Party always has at least one vacant slot for Precinct 3 where he is from.

Fitial’s Republican Party has so far only three of six Precinct 3 slots filled, and they include those for incumbent House vice speaker Felicidad Ogumoro, Roy Rios and Joe Saures. The GOP said three more will be named at a later time.

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos’ Covenant Party also currently has only two slots filled for Precinct 3: incumbent Rep. Edmund Villagomez (Cov-Saipan), and Bryan S. Torres, the Public School System’s mathematics program coordinator.
