Run Saipan will be changing things up for next month’s Underground 5K 21.7, according to coordinator Edward Dela Cruz.

After runners took it easy the past six iterations of the routine 5K courses, the Run Saipan Underground 5K 21.7 on Aug. 14 will literally be an uphill climb and has been rightly named “Stairway to Heaven.”

“The next run Saipan 5K is going to be a one-way route from the Last Command Post (restroom area) to the top of Suicide Cliff. We actually chose all the routes for the year already. If you noticed it’s been all flat courses,” said Dela Cruz, adding that’s the reason they will have an incline course in August.

As always, Run Saipan’s Underground 5K 21.7 will start bright and early at 6am sunrise with a 5:30am sign-up time.

In related news, Northern Marianas Athletics will again hold an open track and field event starting this Friday, July 23, at the Oleai Sports Complex.

However, instead of the earlier announced 5K, NMA’s Track and Field Open Meet will instead have a 3,000m run to kick things off on Friday. Check-in time is 5:30pm.

Like last month’s competition, July’s meet will have nine divisions—18-and-under, open, masters 35-39, masters 40-44, master 45-49, masters 50-54, masters 55-59, master 60-64, masters 65+, and masters 70+. Aside from the aforementioned 3,000m run, other events include the 200m, 800m, 4x100m, javelin, shotput, and discus—all held on Saturday, July 24.

NMA also continues to recruit for volunteers for future events, the biggest of which is the 2022 Northern Marianas Pacific Games that the CNMI will be hosting for the time ever from June 17 to 25 next year.
