SSHS’ My WAVE Club leads beach cleanup
Saipan Southern High School’s My WAVE Club, in collaboration with the 15th CNMI Youth Congress, Mount Carmel School’s Honors Society, and Hopwood’s Americorps, did a beach cleanup last Saturday that netted them 11 large bags of trash.
A total of 30 club members cleaned up the entire stretch of the beach from Lally 4 all the way to the Aquarius Beach Club, starting from 7:30am up to 10am.

According to My WAVE president Reynafe Aniga, they initiated the beach cleanup to beautify the island’s beaches and promote tourism.
“For the past three years, the My WAVE club helped me find my strengths and weaknesses, made me realize the importance of our island’s nature and how it affects the tourism industry,” said Aniga. “Coordinating events with my officers such as [this] beach cleanup helped spread awareness of the My WAVE Club and its purpose.”
Aniga said their My WAVE Club will be hosting more beach cleanups throughout the year under MVA’s Beautify My Marianas and BECQ’s Adopt A Beach Program.
Djaymarch Ong, My WAVE Club’s vice president for volunteer work, believes that volunteering in all its forms encourages people to take part in the development of the community.
“It is also a great way to unite, gain experience, promote personal growth and self esteem. My purpose in joining the My WAVE Club is mainly to give back to our beautiful island by using my knowledge and the will to benefit the people around me. Our club looks forward to many more future volunteer work because our goal is to promote tourism and beautify our island,” he said.
Ong said that doing the beach cleanup “was truly a learning experience.”
“My WAVE Club has united a group of students passionate about our island and tourism to do good in our community. It was the first event of the school year for our club and it will pave the way for future activities,” he said. “There have been some challenges but our club officers are united to guarantee a successful event. It was an amazing experience and I truly look forward to our future activities.”
