SSHS Manta Ray Battalion hands over command
Saipan Southern High School’s Manta Ray Battalion conducted their annual change of command and promotion ceremony for the incoming battalion commander last May 5, 2023, in front of the school’s Manta Ray Monument.
The ceremony marked the official occasion when outgoing battalion commander C/LTC Julius Torres relinquished his position to the incoming battalion commander, C/LTC Mechaella De Ramos.
The Manta Ray Battalion was in a battalion formation from 9am to 11am and started with the battalion color guard presenting the colors while the mational and CNMI anthems were sung by C/2LT Logan Mendiola and Johanna Mogar.
De Ramos received the colors after passing through outgoing C/CSM Anthony Villagomez, Torres, and the SSHS principal Vince Dela Cruz.
Torres was given a plaque as a recognition for his dedication, commitment, and strong leadership skills while he commanded the Manta Ray Battalion during the school year 2022-2023. De Ramos takes over for the school year 2023-2024.
Both outgoing and incoming battalion commanders celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake shared with the other cadets.
The Manta Ray Battalion’s senior army instructor is CSM (ret.) Richard Basa and its Army instructor is SFC (ret.) Deynarose Sunderland.
The change of command ceremony is a tradition that symbolizes the handover of continuous and complete authority over the unit and crew from one person to another.
The battalion thanked Dr. Yvonne Pangelinan, senior director of Student and Support Services; BOE vice chair SGM (ret.) Herman Atalig, BOE member Maisie Tenorio, and both the outgoing and incoming battalion commanders’ parents for showing up for this memorable occasion The battalion also thanks Dela Cruz, SSHS vice principal Arisa Sakai-Peters, and CNMI State Teacher of the Year Donovan Tudela.
